Description: General Paul B Malone inspecting soldier at Camp Derby. The 30th Infantry, consisting of 165 officers and men, set up a model camp, June 29, 1935, south of the Indian Village. The soldiers named the camp "Camp George Derby," after a U.S. Army lieutenant and humorist who wrote Phoenixiana (1855) and Squibob Papers (1865), describing his misadventures in San Diego's "Old Town."
